Hotmail

Taken from http://help.msn.com/!data/en_us/data/MSN_Hotmail_PIMv9.its51/$content$/PIM_REF_RestrictedAttachmts.htm

Files with the following extensions cannot be added as attachments to Hotmail messages (and also cannot be received via Hotmail):

ade, adp, asp, bas, bat, chm, cmd, com, cpl., crt, exe, hlp, hta, inf, ins, isp, its, js, jse, lnk, mdb, mde, mdt, mdw, msc, msi, msp, mst, pcd, pif, reg, scr, sct, shb, shs, tmp, url, vb, vbe, vbs, vsd, vsmacros, vss, vst, vsw, ws, wsc, wsf, wsh

Closing a free Hotmail account - go to the Help Menu after logging in, you will be directed to the following page which has a 'close my account' button:
http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/accountclose

The text of the page states:

"By closing this account, you are marking your account inactive. Stored e-mail will be permanently deleted and inbound mail will be refused. Your .NET Passport will still function, and your e-mail name will be reserved.

To re-activate your account, simply go to http://www.hotmail.com and enter your Sign-In name and password. You will then be able to send and receive e-mail using MSN Hotmail once again.

If your account stays 'inactive' for over a period of 90 days, it will be permanently deleted. This delay is necessary to discourage users from engaging in fraudulent activity. Additionally, due to the limited number of names available, we may allow other users to sign up for and use your current e-mail name after your account has been permanently deleted..."

Archived mail

Pre MSN8 - .dbx file type.  MSN8 - .maildb file type.

Storage location:

c:\windows\applications data\msn 6\user data

or

c:\documents and settings\{userprofile}\application data\msn6\userdata

MSN 9

c:\Documents and Settings\{user profile}\My Documents\MSN_Mail.msnbak

c:\windows\local settings\application data\microsoft\msn\db\mail(email account address)\

c:\documents and settings\{userprofile}\local settings\application data\microsoft\msn\db\mail(email account address)\

On my system, downloaded email messages can be seen in the mail* folder (they have an .000 extension). Try opening each one using Notepad).  Unfortunately, opening using Notepad does not allow access to attachments.

The \msn\db\ folder contains (temporary) local copies of email messages read using MSN Explorer; you will also see a couple of .sdf files which (at least on my system) seem to contain only emails subject to junk mail filtering and my addressbook.

The correct http server address for @msn.com email for Outlook and Outlook Express is:

http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata

@hotmail.com uses a different address:

http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
